About Cornwall

Cornwall forms the westernmost part of the south-west peninsula of Great Britain, surrounded by sea on three sides, and bordering Devon, over the river Tamar. Truro is its only city and is a historic market town. The name comes from the Cornish word ‘Tri-veru’ meaning three rivers.

The Cornish language was a Celtic language and was spoken long before the English language came to dominate, but has not been spoken since the early C20th, though it has influenced the dialect and accent of the region.

Traditionally tin and copper mining as well as fishing and agriculture were Cornwall’s main industries, although during the C20th the railways led to the growth of perhaps its most significant current industry: tourism. The area is noted for its wild moorland landscapes, its long, varied coastline with beautiful beaches, its many place-names derived from the Cornish language, and its relatively warm weather.

Extensive stretches of Cornwall’s coastline, and Bodmin Moor, are protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
