About New York City
New York City is in the Northeastern United States, approximately halfway between Washington, D.C. and Boston. Situated on one of the world’s largest natural harbours, New York City consists of five boroughs; Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island.
It is the most densely populated major city in the United States, with as many as 800 languages spoken, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. It is famous as the backdrop to countless movies and TV series, as well as for its theatre, both on and off Broadway, its architecture, yellow cabs, culturally distinct boroughs, state parks and colourful characters.
The summers are steamy and hot and the winters can be very cold. The Bronx is New York City’s northernmost borough and the only New York City borough with a majority of it a part of the mainland United States.
It is the location of Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees, and home to the largest cooperatively owned housing complex in the United States, Co-op City. It is also home to the Bronx Zoo, the world’s largest metropolitan zoo, which spans 265 acres and houses over 6,000 animals.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Bronx received many immigrant groups as it was transformed into an urban community, first from various European countries (particularly Ireland, Germany and Italy) and later from the Caribbean region, as well as African American migrants from the American South. The Bronx is also the birthplace of rap and hip hop culture.
