About the Speaker
"I was born on Staten island, but I grew up in Brooklyn, in Bensonhurst. On 67th and 20th Avenue. Now I’m in Dyker Heights. I work as a receptionist in Manhattan for a large international publishing company. Anyway, we’re Italian, that’s our heritage. We are very close, very loving, caring, very opinionated. If they need to say something, they’re not shy! My mother worked in a company that was in Midtown. She would answer the phones, do emailing, like I do, just more in the background. My dad drove a truck, a tractor-trailer, an 18-wheeler. Both my parents were born in Brooklyn. The majority of my family, and my grandparents were all born here."

About New York City and Brooklyn
New York City is in the Northeastern United States, approximately halfway between Washington, D.C. and Boston. Situated on one of the world’s largest natural harbours, New York City consists of five boroughs; Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. It is the most densely populated major city in the United States. It is famous as the backdrop to countless movies and TV series, as well as for its theatre, both on and off Broadway, its architecture, yellow cabs, culturally distinct boroughs, state parks and colourful characters.
Brooklyn borders the borough of Queens at the western end of Long Island, and has several bridge and tunnel connections to the borough of Manhattan across the East River. It was an independent city until January 1, 1898, when it was consolidated with the other cities, boroughs, and counties to form the modern City of New York, surrounding the Upper New York Bay with five constituent boroughs. In the first decades of the 21st century, Brooklyn has experienced a renaissance as an avant garde destination. Italian Americans are mainly concentrated in the neighbourhoods of Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, Bay Ridge, Bath Beach, Gravesend, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens, where there are many Italian restaurants, bakeries, delicatessens, pizzerias, cafes, and social clubs.
