About the Speaker

"I grew up in Somerset and moved to London 10 years ago to go to college. I went to a state secondary school. My dad was in the RAF and then worked in sales. My mum worked as a teaching assistant. I would say we are lower middle class."

About NRP

NRP can stand for ‘Non Regional Pronunciation’ and/or ‘New Received Pronunciation’. It is a variety of speech that, while definitely southern English in its overall characteristics, does not contain any obvious local accent or class features.

It is an ideal model for anyone wanting to sound English, but not overly ‘posh’ or ‘regional’. It is used by many newsreaders, and by actors such as Daniel Craig and Emma Thompson.
