About the Speaker

"My parents were both from upper middle class English families. However, that said, I went to a very ordinary all girls' Roman Catholic Secondary School in Bishop's Stortford on the Herts/Essex border. I have spent most of my professional life teaching in state schools and colleges in Essex and North London."

About NRP

NRP can stand for ‘Non Regional Pronunciation’ and/or ‘New Received Pronunciation’. It is a variety of speech that, while definitely southern English in its overall characteristics, does not contain any obvious local accent or class features. It is an ideal model for anyone wanting to sound English, but not overly ‘posh’ or ‘regional’. It is used by many newsreaders, and by actors such as Daniel Craig and Emma Thompson.
