About Nottingham, Nottinghamshire

Nottingham is a city in the county of Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands of England. It is known for its links to the legend of Robin Hood and for its lace-making, bicycle and tobacco industries. Nottingham Castle was constructed in the 11th century on a sandstone outcrop by the River Leen. The Anglo-Saxon settlement developed into the English Borough of Nottingham and housed a Town Hall and Law Courts. It was granted its city charter in 1897 as part of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The 19th and 20th centuries saw the rapid growth of coal mining in the county, which transformed whole landscapes and communities. In the 1980’s, with the changing economic climate in the UK and the decline of the coal industry, the Thatcher government closed down most of the coal mines throughout Nottinghamshire. The strikes of 1984/85 still resonate through communities even now.
