About the Speaker

"I was born in Cromford, Derbyshire. After a brief foray into Nottinghamshire for my degree I came back to Derbyshire and now live in Matlock. My father was a solicitor, and my mother primarily a house wife, but accomplished pianist. Essentially I would say that I am white, middle class. I am company director of a small electronics company. I started off as a Methodist, in that my mother took me to Sunday school etc. but I would say I have no religious belief now."

About Derbyshire

Derbyshire is in the East Midlands of England and is home to a substantial portion of the Peak District National Park. It has a mixture of a rural economy in the west, with a former coal mining economy in the northeast (Bolsover district), the Erewash Valley around Ilkeston and in the south around Swadlincote. Derbyshire’s abundance of fast-flowing streams led to a proliferation of the use of water power at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, powering the mills pioneered by Richard Arkwright.

In Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice, Pemberley—the country home of Fitzwilliam Darcy—is situated in Derbyshire, and various characters discuss a day trip to Matlock. A former spa town, Matlock lies on the River Derwent, and has prospered from both the hydrotherapy industry and the cloth mills.
