About Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county in North West England, with a population of 2.7 million. It encompasses one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United Kingdom and comprises ten metropolitan boroughs: Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Manchester and Salford. It is fringed by the Cheshire Plain to the South, and the Pennines to the North and East. Historically, Manchester was part of Lancashire, but as it grew it has become a county of its own.

A boom in textile manufacture brought on the urbanisation of the city during the Industrial Revolution. People travelled to the city for work from all areas of the country. The industrial revolution was key to providing the boom in Manchester’s population, and making it the world’s first industrialised city.

Manchester is now world renowned for its football teams and its music. It is a thriving cultural centre and the home of the BBC.
