About Pensacola, Florida

Florida is in the South Eastern region of the United States, bordered to the north by Alabama and Georgia. Much of the state of Florida is a peninsula situated between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean and the Straits of Florida. The state capital is Tallahassee, the largest city is Jacksonville, and the largest metropolitan area is the Miami metropolitan area.

Tourism makes up a substantial sector of the state economy. Warm weather, sunshine, and hundreds of miles of beaches attract about 60 million visitors to the state every year. The ‘Panhandle’ of Florida is the narrow area that extends off the North West of the state, with an extensive border with Alabama.

Pensacola is the westernmost city in the Florida Panhandle. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 51,923. It is a sea port on Pensacola Bay, which is protected by the barrier island of Santa Rosa and connects to the Gulf of Mexico. A large United States Naval Air Station, the first in the United States, is located southwest of Pensacola (near Warrington); it is the base of the Blue Angels flight demonstration team and the National Naval Aviation Museum. The main campus of the University of West Florida is situated north of the city centre. Nicknames include “World’s Whitest Beaches” (due to the white sand of Florida panhandle beaches), “Cradle of Naval Aviation”, “America’s First Settlement”, and “Redneck Riviera”.
