About the Speaker

"My parents are UK born. I was born in East London and grew up in Gants Hill, Redbridge. Both parents have been working class all their life. All of us are Jewish but don’t follow it by the book, it’s more a cultural thing. I consider myself spiritual. I went to comprehensive school."

About East London

East London in this instance refers to the larger area of North East boroughs as distinct from the smaller sub-district of the East End of the City. It comprises the boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. Its northern most boroughs were historically part of Essex.

As the working population of the East End prospered there was (and continues to be) a traditional exodus North to these boroughs and beyond into Essex. The area has a substantial Jewish, Greek and South Asian population, with synagogues, Jewish community centres and schools across the area. The further north you travel, the more affluent and residential the boroughs become. Redbridge, in the North, is known for its parks and open spaces, shopping areas, and diverse population.
