About Brazilia, Brazil

Brazil is the largest country in both South America and Latin America, with a population of over 200 million. It borders all other South American countries except Ecuador and Chile. It is the largest country to have Portuguese as an official language and the only one in the Americas.

Brasília was planned and developed by in 1956 to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location. Brasília has now been the federal capital of Brazil since 1960. The city is located at the top of the Brazilian highlands in the country’s centre-western region. In 2010, Brasília was ranked the fourth most-populous city in Brazil after São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Salvador. It was chosen as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its modernist architecture and uniquely artistic urban planning. Brasília is a cosmopolitan city, with around 124 embassies, a wide range of restaurants and complete infrastructure ready to host any kind of event. Not surprisingly, the city stands out as an important business tourism destination, which is a large part of the local economy.

In June, large festivals known as “festas juninas” are held celebrating Catholic saints, and the annual Brasilia Festival of Brazilian Cinema is one of the most traditional cinema festivals in Brazil, preserving the tradition to only submit and reward Brazilian movies.
