"I’m 56 and currently live in Australia. I was actually born in London but my parents came to Australia when I was 2 years old as Ten Pound Poms. They were actually one of the first to come out to Australia via aeroplane. I’m a qualified electrical engineer and a qualified mechanical engineer and I predominantly work in the mining industry. I’m happily married and have been for 35 years, with 2 wonderful children and 3 lovely grandchildren."

Australia is the largest country in Oceania and the world’s sixth-largest country by total area. Until the Second World War, the vast majority of settlers and immigrants came from the British Isles, and a majority of Australians have some British or Irish ancestry. It’s population density is among the lowest in the world. In 2016 the Indigenous population was counted at 2.8% of the total population.
New South Wales is a state on the east coast of Australia. ‘The Colony of New South Wales’ was founded as a British penal colony in 1788, and originally comprised more than half of the Australian mainland. During the 19th century the colony’s area was divided to form the British colonies that eventually became New Zealand and the various states and territories of Australia.
Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales. Just under two-thirds of the state’s population live in the Greater Sydney area. It is also the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. It is built around the world’s largest natural harbour. It has many localities and suburbs, each with distinct character and levels of affluence. The final year of convict transportation to Sydney was in 1840. Since then the city has transformed from a colonial outpost into a major global cultural and economic centre. Sydney is amongst the top fifteen most-visited cities in the world, with millions of tourists coming each year to see the city’s landmarks.
For each decade since 1961 the population has increased by more than 250,000. As well as the over 50 thousand people of indigenous heritage living in Sydney, the largest ancestry groups are English, Australian, Irish, Chinese and Scottish. Following World War II, Sydney’s ethnic groups began to diversify. Communities now include Sri Lankan, Indian, Assyrian, Turkish, Thai, Russian, Vietnamese, Filipino, Korean, Greek, Lebanese, Italian, Jewish, Polish, German, Serbian, Macedonian, and Maltese among others. As of the 2011 census, people living in Sydney that were born overseas, accounted for 42.5% of the population of the city.
